The 9th international City Security Conference “SIGG 2017” was held in Opatija (Primorje-Gorski Kotar County/CRO) on March 16th and 17th.
On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Tomislav Ivić as State Secretary in the Ministry of Defense opened the conference. He stated that phenomena such as the migrant crisis or the consequences of climate change strongly influence our everyday life and stress the importance of investment in security measures such as prevention of urban risk and the protection of critical infrastructure. The constant migration of people from rural to urban areas -resulting in denser populated cities – further emphasizes the importance of urban safety and also impacts overall national security.
The participants were welcomed by the mayor of Opatija, Mr. Ivo Dujmić, who stressed the security aspects of the town, and also addressed by Mr. Goran Petrc, the head of the Office of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
The conference which was attended by 113 participants from the Alps-Adriatic area was divided into four modules which dealt with the migrant crisis, new technologies for the protection of critical infrastructure, the prevention of urban risk and urban risks and climate change.
